Anthony Rojo

Anthony Rojo

Before Anthony Rojo became division director of Gwinnett Tech’s Computer Science program, he was responsible for U.S. Army General Schwarzkopf’s satellite radio communication during Desert Storm.
He was known for his organizational skills, love of the outdoors, pride in his job and cutting up with his coworkers to put a smile on your face.
He worked at GTC for 12 rewarding years, a genuinely a great person. Sadly, Anthony passed in May of 2012, after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer. His wife, children, and family were his greatest joys in life and he loved his work at Gwinnett Tech. Anthony has been greatly missed by his family, many dear friends, and co-workers.
In memory of Anthony, a scholarship was dedicated in his name in 2014 for students enrolled in the Computer Information Systems degree program.

Assistance League of Atlanta

Assistance League of Atlanta

A group of 34 women founded the Atlanta Chapter of the Assistance League, in 1982, building on the rich history of the organization that began in the early 1900s as the West’s first nonprofit, nonsectarian, nonpolitical organization. The Assistance League was also the first organization of its kind to recognize the potential of volunteers in helping those less fortunate in the community achieve a better, more meaningful life.
Today, Assistance League has 26,000 members nationwide committing over 2.6 million volunteer hours and $36 million yearly to local communities. Among that membership is the Assistance League of Atlanta that in the early years, sold senior citizens’ crafts at malls and outdoor markets. Knowing that Assistance League needed a permanent home for selling its crafts, members searched for and found a building to lease in downtown Chamblee, Ga., which today is lovingly referred to as “The Mouse House.”
Four buildings and thirty years later, Assistance League of Atlanta has grown into an all-volunteer organization with over 250 members that have recorded on average more than 45,000 volunteer hours each of the last four years.
The Atlanta chapter supports seven avenues of service, including Links to Education, an initiative that provides scholarships to deserving college students pursuing post-secondary education at six Georgia institutions of higher learning, including Gwinnett Technical College. In the last year alone, 26 students have benefited.

In 2004, Diane Coker of the Westye Group Southeast extended her hand to mentor the students of the Interiors Program of Gwinnett Technical College. In appreciation and to honor her commitment to the College, GTC has established a scholarship for students in the Certificate Kitchen and Bath Program.

Coker understands from personal experience what it means financially, physically and emotionally to return to college as an adult. In fact, she returned to school as an adult learner at Gwinnett Technical College.

Recognizing the value of the mentoring she received as a student, Coker’s mantra has been to “pass it forward” in many areas of her life. Michael Liberty and Charles Tyree (“The Liberty Tyree Automotive Scholarship”)

Michael Liberty and Charles Tyree were two Great men who had wonderful talents and abilities regarding repairing vehicles. Due to their love and passion of the automotive industry, they would repair a car for an individual even if one did not have the funds at the time to pay, but needed their car repaired. They both were very well skilled at repairing anything that needed to be fixed, and especially Michael, as he was a hands on type of person and could work miracles. Michael’s profession of being a Mechanic, began from the time he was a teenager and he enjoyed reading a lot of magazines, especially ones related to cars. Mentoring young men about mechanics of a car was a favorite past time that both men thoroughly enjoyed, as it was an area of their life they wanted to shared with young males. Charles was a very outgoing person that like to play practical jokes on people and love to try anything. But, being a great mechanic was his specialty, as he could diagnose any automotive problem and issue along with being very good with electrical problems on vehicles. His profession in addition to being a Mechanic, was a Truck Driver, which he took pride in as well. On Charles’s spare and leisure time, he rode motorcycles and a 4 wheeler vehicle. Both gentlmen had a love for barbecuing and had good hearts, always laughing, smiling and overall caring individuals. Michael and Charles have greatly been missed by their family and friends.

In memory of the two well-loved gentlemen, a yearly Scholarship has been established and dedicated to honor them in their name for their amazing skill set and love of Automotive beginning in 2018 for students enrolled in the Automotive Technology program, as they always had compassion to assist anyone that needed assistance with their vehicles.

Millennium Mat Company

Millennium Mat Company

The Millennium Mat Company established a scholarship to assist Gwinnett Technical College adult education students in gaining their GED® and transitioning to college. It is important to the Millennium Mat Company to give back to the community, and help others make their dreams a reality.

In 1997, the idea of Millennium was sparked by two men – Bob Kohlhepp, chairman of Cintas Corp (CTAS), a $4 billion service company, and Ian Malpass, CEO of Just Mats Limited, a small privately held UK company. Despite the disparity in size of business, they shared a common idea – being “positively dissatisfied with everything they do.” That common sense of drive for perfection, combined with a desire to grow the floor care business, prompted a spontaneous offer to join forces and create a world-class company.

Millennium’s 200,000-square-foot facility in Suwanee, Ga. houses state-of-the-art production space. Most of the production equipment used at Millennium is custom-designed and proprietary. Through constant investment in technology, the organization has the capacity to produce more than 1.8 million square meters of printed products, 4.8 million square meters of dust control mats and half a million units of molded rubber mats every year.

Walton Electric Membership Corporation

Walton Electric Membership Corporation

Walton Electric Membership Corporation (EMC), a cooperative owned by those who receive its services, is one of the largest of almost 1,000 electric cooperatives in the country. EMC’s mission is to provide reliable energy and electric services ¬– delivered efficiently, with extraordinary customer care.

Walton EMC was formed in 1936 when seven community leaders each gave $1 toward the organizational expenses of the co-op, to provide electricity to residents in rural northeast Georgia. Because investor-owned utilities did not see the profitability of running lines through these areas due to a sparse customer base, local residents had to do it themselves. That sparse country grew into the suburbs of today. However the idea of a customer-owned electric company is as viable now as it was then.

Today, Walton EMC supplies energy to more than 120,000 residential, business and industrial accounts in 10 northeast Georgia counties. The cooperative owns three subsidiaries. A wholly-owned subsidiary, Walton EMC Natural Gas, provides natural gas to residential and business customers throughout Georgia. EMC Security, a joint venture with Jackson EMC and GreyStone Power, offers residential and commercial security services and residential home technology. A third subsidiary is Doyle I LLC, a natural gas-fired electricity generating plant.
